Malik sniffled angrily but kept helping his father set up the booth so he could sell his wares in the market outside of the pharaoh's palace. His father was so cruel! For no reason at all, he had tied Malik down three nights ago, heated a knife, and carved into him like one of the birds the noble-people caught down by the Nile. He was hurting so bad, but his father didn't even care!

His father laid out all of his merchandise, his touch far more loving for a few trinkets than it was for his own son. "I don't want you causing any trouble today!" the man snapped, taking a length of rope. Ignoring Malik's protests, he tied both of the boy's hands together and tied them to the side of the booth tight. "If I hear a peep out of you, you won't eat for days, you understand me?!"

"I understand, Daddy!" Malik insisted fearfully. He turned away and watched a man leading a line of slave-girls down the road towards the auction-block. Malik didn't feel any pity for them; unlike him, they looked relatively clean and well-fed.

*Their* keepers had a good reason to keep them healthy and pretty since they would sell for more that way. Malik didn't even have that small luxury.
